The yearly Gothenburg tourism fair is the largest travel event in Sweden. The bus operators and manufacturers take the opportunity to inform the visitors. This year I took part in the panel debate on the “Future of the bus”. The moderator, Gabriella Ahlström, asked about the plan of the Swedish public transport union to become 90% fossil free to 2018.
To reach the target all buses bought from this year needs to be compatible with running on 100% biofuels. I discussed the difficulty in choosing the right fuel that remains available and competitive for the years to come. Which is the remaining value of a bus running on a non conventional fuel in 10 years time?
The Swedish government is determined to be in the forefront phasing out fossil fuels. We certainly support the general direction but there is a severe complication for Sweden to be alone in the “fore front”. Depending on future technology choice also of other countries in ten years the early Swedish technologies may turn out to be either good or odd agent buses ready for the museum.
